FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

This May 5th and 6th, an expected 20,000 flying disc enthusiasts will be getting together ‘just to play a round’. The occasion is the World’s Biggest Disc Golf Weekend, which will be taking place on over 200 disc golf courses globally, including Dr. A.H. Baker Park right here in Calgary.

This event will be an opportunity for interested Calgarians to learn to play Disc Golf in a friendly, non-competitive environment, alongside members of the local disc golf community. All players who register on site may complete 9 ‘holes’ of Disc Golf in order to qualify as a participant in World’s Biggest. Globally, the Disc Golf course with the greatest number of participants (World’s Biggest) will win free Disc Golf baskets for their local courses. Last years overall winner was Ashikaga City, Japan, with a total of 801 registered players.

Success in World’s Biggest can also occur if through this event Calgary Disc Golf increases the number of friends and partners who support the safe, healthy, and active use of our River Park system. Members of the local community associations who are stakeholders in this park, along with members of the administrative and legislative arms of our local government are especially invited to attend World’s Biggest. There they will have the opportunity to meet and talk to some of the best Disc Golfers in Canada, including members of the Professional Disc Golf Association

It is also time to start cleaning up Calgary’s River Valley, and to remove litter that has lain in the parks for most of the winter. During the weekend of World’s Biggest disc golf volunteers will also, as they have in the past, carry litterbags in addition to their golf bags, with the goal of picking up and disposing of every piece of litter in Dr. A.H. Baker Park.

Alberta Disc Sport Association is a registered non-profit association dedicated to promoting all types of games played with flying discs. Throughout the weekend several other disc sports will be played at Baker Park including Double Disc Court, Guts, Flicket and Ultimate Frisbee. World’s Biggest will begin at 0900, Saturday May 5, 2001, and will end at 1800 hrs, Sunday May 6, 2001. Free entry with a Food Bank item.

Dr. A. H. Baker Park is located on the north bank of the Bow River, directly opposite
